New Zealand and Australia remain firm in their sanctions, and so they should!! Chaudhry's excuse that these two countries did nothing in the past 6 years with regards to governance issues is waaayyy off topic and really stupid. You see, the governance issues were from a people's elected government. And the people of Fiji were given proper channels to voice their grievances regarding the government's policies and issues. There was always a channel open to us the public to speak up and be heard. That was during the reign of democracy and an elected government. People of this country were not threatened, intimidated, beaten, killed for speaking out against the policies of an elected government.

WE DON'T HAVE THAT CHANNEL OPEN TO US NOW.

The illegal military regime are in power thru illegal means, and Chaudhry's taking home his illegaly attained $50k plus salary not because the people put him there! but because he opted to join this illegal regime!
THERE IS NO OPPOSITION PARTY to this illegal military regime to counter and debate the issues and policies they implement.
We the people DO NOT HAVE A SAY IN WHAT'S GOING ON!
We the people are NOT ALLOWED TO SPEAK OUT, lest we be taken in for questioning, beaten or even worse!

Chaudhry, the international arena is watching closely and monitoring the situation on the ground. You seem to be loosing it badly as of late.

Your false accusations against the Elections Commisioner Mr. Karavaki has come back to bite you and your illegal regime. Chaudhry's claim that the Elections were 'rigged' stank (lewenski is there such a word?) so bad that even the Editor of the Fiji Times threw it back at him. Mr Karavaki the esteemed Elections Commisioner has returned the compliments ten fold.
The Times Editorial explains the irrelevance of Chaudhry's claim, and I thought I'd dwell a bit on that to enlighten the rural readers (if you can print and disseminate please do so) on the processes involved. Understanding the processes somewhat will empower you the reader to conclude for yourself the value of his claim.

My understanding, having worked in the Elections of 2001 and 2006 (Lewenski you reading this?:)), is that the Elections Commission worked closely with Australian and New Zealand Elections consultants in the 2006 Elections. These consultants also produced ongoing reports regarding the areas they were involved in, continually reporting back to their governments on the status of the work they were doing. Some of these reports were made available to all political parties taking part in the 2006 Elections, along with the reports produced by the respective international election watchdogs.
There is a lot of work involved in the organising and collection of Voter registration information to be entered into the Electoral roll database. This roll is then updated various times during in the build up to Elections as is required in the Elections Act. For each update, the updated rolls (not sure if only those updated, or the whole roll) are printed and given to the various Parties and monitoring bodies/agents. There are avenues for corrections from respective parties concerning their constituencies, and these corrections are then run through the whole process i've just mentioned. There is of course a timeframe to work with and the elections commission is limited in the number of correctios, updates etc they have in order to meet the deadlines. All this I am sure Mr Chaudhry knows of himself, having been involved in Fiji politics from as far back before the first coup in 1987.

Now the FINAL printing of the Electoral ballot papers are dependent on the

Total voters registered per constituency

Commision's allocation of Polling stations for each day

and which constituencies are going to be available at each polling station.

I emphasised FINAL because during the build up before Polling starts, if the Elections Office makes an administrative error in printing faulty ballot papers then the Office is required to destroy the incorrect ones and there is a process for doing this. If memory serves me correct this occured in the build up to the 2006 Elections - I believe it was a print out with an incorrect logo for a candidate above or below the line,or something like that. I understand that the "destroying" process was followed by the Elections Office, with the Australian and New Zealand representatives kept in the know about it. Transparency was the keyword then and there was no complaint about these papers at all during the build up to Elections, during Eletions or after Elections - after all they could not be used in voting as the mistaken papers would have been identified during the Counting Process. eh Chaudhry?.

You can see the numbers game coming into play here.
The determination of how many Electoral papers to allocate for each polling station - for each day - is never an exact science. Having extra papers printed is a norm, they did so in 2001, and possibly other elections.
Why? Well the Elections Office can never be sure how many people will turn up to each polling station on a given day to vote for a particular constituency.
The Elections Office has always made voting easier for us the voters by opening polling stations close to us at certain days, and in case we can't make it for those days allow us to vote at near by polling stations also. Because the number of votes cast at each station is never known, the Elections Office has to work with bulk figures in determining how many papers to issue per station per day and reshuffling these to be used again at the next polling station and so forth.

Chaudhry's attempt at misleading the public with his "over 600,000 Elections papers" excess is really taking advantage of the ignorant public, most probably aimed at increasing his dwindling support group in his constituency and Fiji cane belt areas. You see what Chaudhry did not reveal, and no one knows if this is highlighted in the audit reports he was quoting from, is that no conclusion can be based on this number alone!
The following are points that need to be addressed to give us a better picture of the situation

Of this 650,000 papers;

What is the breakdown of this 650,000 ballot papers per Constituency ?

Were these excess papers printed during a single print session?
If not, then explain why and how many excess papers were printed during each print session?

Would these papers have affected the results of any of the constituencies?

The last question is the most important one.
To answer the last question properly, we'll have to know the answer to the first question, and how valid these excess papers were come Election time.

The fact that Chaudhry did not reveal this vital information makes his arrogant smile all the more irritating. (caught you off guard there didn't I). Yes, like you I am tired of seeing his arrogance reflected in his online photos, his TV comments and his attemtp to con the populace into supporting him! Back on track here...

The breakdown is important as we the public need to know, if there was something illegal going on, how many excess papers were there regarding each constituency at each polling station for voters. How many papers could have been used to "manipulate the results" as he claimed it.

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY: HOW COULD IT HAVE BEEN USED TO "MANIPULATE THE RESULTS" AS CHAUDHRY CLAIMS !?!?!

Chaudhry went further to digging his own political grave by stating the following points:

"A detailed audit of the ballot papers was impossible because the Elections Office:"
     Did not keep a record of ballot papers issued to each polling station;

    Failed to maintain a master record of ballot papers against which       reconciliation could be carried out of used/unused ballot papers;

The ballot papers USED per polling station is verified at the end of the day for each polling station per day. The polling stations are bulk issued with ballot papers and a record of the number of papers used per day is recorded

            - as each vote is cast
- and a final count at the end of the day when the polling station is closed for polling papers USED.
For each of these processes, a representative of each political party is allowed to be present in the polling room to keep track of the count.
The final count of papers USED is then substracted from the bulk count given for each station. Papers not used are returned to the Main Polling Office by Policemen, and a further verification count is done at the Main polling office of the papers returned. Again I believe the parties are allowed to be around when this is done, but am not sure on that account.

Maybe Chaudhry's FLP party missed out on some, but it appears that the Elections Office didn't.

It's important thing to highlight here is that in the whole process the USED ballot papers are important to keep track of, not the unused ones. The USED ones are the ones that should tally with the Registered Voters who Voted. Remember all those people sitting in the voting room with books in front of them and crossing names off? Yes well Chaudhry's people were a part of that group also, making sure that each used paper was accounted for.

Did not carry out a reconciliation of used and unused or spoilt ballot papers after the elections as required under the Electoral Act;
This reconcilliation was incomplete as Mr. Karavaki stated since the papers were still located at his Office when he was illegaly removed from Office by this bunch of illegal idiots. (yes, its getting to me).
Mr Karavaki stated that they were still in the process of finalising the audit when he was removed.
Notice that Chaudhry makes no mention of this audit, no reference to the legal work done by the Elections committe.

Burnt a large quantity of allegedly spoilt and unused ballot papers, which was in direct breach of the Electoral Act. The explanations for this gross misconduct was "administrative error";
My understanding is that the papers printed during the first few printing runs and were incorrect needed to be burned. Sitiveni Rabuka clarified the process in which this is done and it appears that the Elections Office followed this process. I think I remember this happening during the course of the build up for Elections. If Chaudhry has records of the burning, then this process was followed as was required by the Elections Act. If he is referring to this set of incorrect ballot papers, then what is the issue mr illegaly appointed minister?

The Supervisor of Elections is required by law to Gazette the results of the general elections based on reports submitted by Returning Officers.

Wasn't this Gazetted when the Government started its rule after Elections! I recall hearing the Elections Office state clearly all the results of the Elections as each count was completed. Does he mean Gazette it as in how the illegal military regime have been pushing out gazettes in their attempts to make all their illegal appointments legal?

The people of this nation, particularly those that live in the cane belt area and believe in Chaudhry's claims, need to understand that the Fiji Electoral Process is a model that has been approved by various local Political Parties and NGOs along with international countries.
The processes involved in every Election we have is carried out with so many verification, checks and double checks and all this with people looking over their shoulders so to speak.
This is so because it

ENFORCES TRANSPARENCY at each step, with the close monitoring of the Elections Commision by international bodies and local party representatives.

ENFORCES INTEGRITY at each step as various bodies have input at various stages of the Elections, including the political parties taking part, the government representatives, the Ministry of Finance for financial requirements, and the international bodies monitoring their investments in the Elections department.

DISCOURAGES 'RIGGING' of Electoral results as the combination of the two points mentioned previously reduces the possibility of one political party rigging the Electoral results ; be it current Government, a political party or some influence form within the Elections Commission.

This is why countries like Australia, New Zealand and other international bodies like the Commonwealth, the US, the EU and according to the Fiji Times editorial a group from the USP, are there to monitor the process ensuring that all parties are up to date with the latest information, all parties are informed and that the Electoral commision is abiding by the rules of the Elections Act and Constitution of Fiji. The same Constitution that Voreqe, Chaudhry and their bunch of thugs tore apart since December 5.

This is why Mr Karavaki states that the papers that were in excess were all accounted for and located in his office at the time he was unconstitutionally removed from his Office. He is not responsible for what occurred after his removal! Chaudhry is!

What is more astounding is the fact that Chaudhry claims that the Elections Office and Mr Karavaki need to provide proof to counter various allegations. Chaudhry has not provided any substantial proof to support his allegations, just pushing the burden of proof to Mr Karavaki in his letter to the editor in today's Fiji Times Friday 11th May. (if link doesn't work, check Fiji Times archives)

Doesn't this technique sound so farmiliar! Voreqe used that technique as his excuse for coup saying that there was "extreme wide scale corruption" and still to this day he hasn't been able to show us proof of this corruption that would justify a vote of no faith by Cabinet of the Elected Government.

A fellow blogger completes this argument by clearing up the air on the failed Elections techniques used by the anti-SDL parties their attempt to gang up on SDL, the clarification of the numbers game, and highlights the important fact that this "audit report" was done by a bunch of people appointed by this illegal Finance Minister Chaudhry.

Now I'd better put this out there in case what they say about the Military blocking this is actually true.
Read the latest news update from Pacific Radio News and tell me that they're not desperate!

Are We There Yet?

It's now the 5th month and counting. Nothing has changed for the better, just gotten worse. The people have listened to the coup perpetrators and apologists, in their attempts to justify the actions of the military led regime, and are now fed up and starting to speaking out against this corrupt "clean up campaign".

We have seen the Fiji Military Commander Voreqe Bainimarama make a complete fool of himself in his outbursts against the US and other countries who have decided to call for a quick return to democracy. The people watched as Bainimarama tried to put a spin on the results of the EU trip to make it sound like EU agreed with them! These points were conditional, and so far Voreqe has broken the first one with the extension of the Emergency Decree for another month.

Then we had the May Day Protest organised by my fellow bloggers Intelligentsiya, Good Men and Women Doing Something, Discombobulated Bubu and other supporters and contributors to their blogs. This in my opinion was a success - not because I'm one of them, but simply because the military in their feeble attempts to deny hunting "Fijian Black" made this blogger and his protest receive the attention it deserved. Regardless of the Lewenski propaganda, people protested in their own ways, and though the numbers may not have been visibly large there was a lot of feedback on what people did.

Thank you to those of you who took action in protest against this illegal regime. Congratulations for standing for something you believe in.

In reading recent editorials in the Fiji Times and Nai Lalakai, the voice of the people are now getting louder with the common question being asked this illegal military regime:

Where is the proof of this so called "widespread corruption" that you started claiming in 2002?

Did you have this proof before the coup?

Where is the result of this clean up campaign Voreqe and his goons keep harping on about?

What is there to clean up?

Who should be doing the clean up?

The same Nai Lalakai issue had two interviews on the matter of the disbanding of the GCC. Interesting read for the indigenous populace. That this indigenous news paper is questioning the intentions of this illegal regime is a major accomplishment in itself.

IF Voreqe was as accountable as he and his senior officers (Naivalurua, Teleni, Driti, Lewenski, Naupoto...) claim to be, these questions would have been answered long before!
After all, they did have 4 years and 2 elections to prepare their case against the SDL led government and provide proof that will stand in a court of law - current tainted judiciary aside!

If Voreqe was as accountable as he claims himself to be; there'd be more support for this "clean-up" campaign then there is now!

If Voreqe was as accountable as he claims himself to be; Countries such as US, Australia, NZ, and organisations such as EU would not be holding back funds on conditional release for quick return to Elections.

If Voreqe was as accountable these countries would not be holding sanctions against Fiji!.

So what has happened in April?

Voreqe humiliated publicly by giving back the US their "street". From the increasing emphasis on spin that the EU was working with this illegal regime to "move the country forward" it was obvious that something was amiss. As the information filtered in later, publications in the Fiji Times and other blogs showed that the EU funds were to be given based on conditions. The conditions listed out were all in line with the reason why I started this blog.
Read here about the list of EU conditions to be met before this illegal regime would get the money

Driti playing his deflection game again (must've taken pointers from my article) :)
this time blaming Rabuka for the coup culture. This author claimed that the blogs were being run by NGO staff who were "living the high life". It appears that their are a small group of people who have been allowed to speak out for this coup, slating us bloggers and the previous Government. More then not their arguments are the same, just different words. They argue that to go against this coup is to support the deposed SDL government and it's "racist policies". I for one did not vote for SDL in the last elections and do not plan on doing so in the next one. The similar templates used by these various speakers hints at a coordinated effort by the junta at building "public perception" - to borrow from Leweni's book of phrases. As a fellow blogger has already taken apart their arguments and points, I shall quickly move on.

The attempt at grouping and labelling the Fiji Freedom bloggers movement was so obvious that even the untrained mind could distinguish it from the truth.

This effort in itself speaks volumes of the increasing lack of support this junta has, and their realisation of it. We the people of Fiji wait and watch to see who personally benefits from their statements with what rewards.

We celebrate Media Freedom day with Lewenski telling the nation that the military supports the right to information, but will only disseminate the information they deem relevant to the public - on a "need to know" basis.
read more about the event from a bloggers perspective

The self proclaimed Fijian Affairs expert Epeli Ganilau disbands the Great Council of Chiefs (Bose Levu Vakaturaga) because they refused to support the President's nomination of Vice President - a nominee who has already taken a leading role in this illegal regime. This blatant slap in the face for the indigenous Fijian has started a rift amongst the Fijians of this nation, with the majority behind their Chiefs. Those who support the illegally appointed Epeli Ganilau (failed politician who couldn't win his seat in 2006 election) are keeping a very low profile due to the caliber of their opposition, the Vanua's support for the GCC. This rift has somewhat started what could be seen as the Fijian Civil War, a clash between the traditional indigenous Fijian and the pro-coup/anti-SDL/anti-Chief Fijian. The indigenous Fijian culture is now undergoing its biggest challenge in its short democratic history, with what could be the beginning of the end for the Fijian hierarchical structure.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

Fiji citizens are again subjected to the rules of the Emergency Decree, extend once again to the end of May. This prohibits the great minds from organising public rallys to express our disagreement with the existing illegal regime and the crimes that they have committed against us the people of this nation. It denies us the freedom to speak out against the illegal military regime.
I had hoped that this would not be the case as the illegal military regime would understand that they risk all the EU money by breaking this first promise to the EU. It appears that they are either subjecting themselves to the temperamental manner in which Voreqe governs himself and this country, or they are too focused on their power play that they think they can push the envelope as far as they can with these international bodies. They have obviously made the assumption that given time, these international sanctions will be lifted and things will go back to normal on the international front. Assumptions...

We see the illegal military regime pulling back our esteemed ambassadors all in the name of "reshuffling". This is a public confirmation of the original intention of this group of illegal administration - to replace all those appointed to various posts under previous Government with their own friends and associates - regardless of credentials. The fact that this whole process is being carried out under the very noses of the people of Fiji says a lot for the Fiji people's mentality of acceptance and "shoulder shrugs".

Sadly, whilst a seemingly small group use the blogs for their voices to be heard, the real voices of frustrations are out there being smothered by the apparent media self-censorship and isolation from central areas of activities.

We see the illegal regime desperately trying to make the international countries give them breathing space, delaying the elections as much as possible. We have the international countries and bodies placing "smart sanctions" on the members and supporters of this illegal regime. We have the junta publicly claiming to move this country forward whenever they accomplish something that was started and planned before the coup - a typical case of twisting perception making it appear as though they deserve all the credit. The reason why they're doing this is obvious.

Without the international funding this illegal military regime is dependant on, they will not succeed.
The illegal military regime realise the fact that the people of Fiji, ordinary citizens like you and me, are tired of their lies and deception; their daily insult of our intelligence with their unending corruption and blatant rape of our rights!

Fiji now has a MILITARY POLICE deployed across the nation under the guise of assisting Police with their police work fighting the "recent increase in crime".

The illegal military regime have acknowledged the potential threat to their illegal rule of the public moving in a coordinated effort to destabilise their regime - why else would they deploy soldiers to police stations! In doing so, they have only served to confirm the public perception that the Police are mere military puppets.
They are also confirming the Military state that Fiji's leadership has become.

Sad time to be a policeman, having their hard earned well deserved reputation dragged down to the same level as the military - all because Voreqe kicked out all the honourable senior policemen in place of disgraced ones.

Increase compared to what time? The obvious increase started in December 5 with the overthrow of a legally elected Government. The illegal regime's failed attempt at declaring the 2006 Elections invalid has left them with no other avenue to legally justify their actions. Their moral justifications for the December 5 coup flew out the window the minute they started, with their lack of control over the violent abuse of citizens' rights and eventual murder of two innocent citizens.

This public show of force further confirms the extent of Military rule in this country. The recent crimes committed in this country have not exceeded the crime rate of previous years, yet is being used as an excuse to deploy armed military personnel with the police. Police being joined by an institutions run by yet-to-be-tried criminals in the fight against crime. How ironic.

It appears that with this recent instant police recruitment, the days of free public gatherings are over for Fiji - for as long as this military regime continues its illegal rule.

Mahendra Chaudhry is now announcing the proposal to downsize the Government - a concept that was initiated by the Qarase led Government from 2001 till their overthrow in 2006. The manner in which this was reported made it appear as though the work was all done by this illegal regime. Similar trends in past reporting (EU trip) all spun to make it sound like the international bodies were complying with this illegal regime's plans. We all know the truth in that!
It is unfortunate for the current civil servants as this downsizing (propaganda phrase is "right sizing") is really another means of the illegal military regime getting more cash for their cash strapped agenda.

We have yet to see the progress of the murder investigations into the murders of the late Nimilote Verebasaga and Sakiusa Rabaka in separate incidents. Other Pacific political giant Australia and New Zealand are still enforcing their smart bans and sanctions on Fiji's illegal regime. EU still holds the illegal regime to the

In short the illegal regime appears more desperate in trying to secure more funding in their capitalising on the funds already secured by the deposed government. There appears to be more intimidation coming our way, possibly to deter any civilian from expressing their opinions about this illegal regime by deploying more soldiers on the streets with their recent deployments to Police stations around the country. Although the crime rate has been worse before, the report of recent criminal activities are being used by the military for this deployment.

As a citizen you must ask yourself, will the soldiers based at the various police stations make them get to our houses faster?
Will their presence decrease the police's reaction time when a crime is reported?
Their presence is simply just to intimidate the citizens - criminals and citizens alike.
Will that work?
Obviously not, the criminals have been at it before the coup, and are back at it again. That this Military Police presence may deter criminals is very questionable, but it certainly will intimidate the increasing number of citizens who are frustrated with this illegal regime.

Fiji has reached a stage where 4 coups down the line, the people are more aware of their rights to a democratically elected government, and the illegality of a coup, and don't need a coup to show them the blatant abuse of power that is being exercised by this illegal military regime.

That this coup is illegal goes without saying - even the illegally appointed Interim Prime Minister Jona Senilagakali acknowledge that this coup was illegal. He even went on to say that we should just "accept it and move on", words later echoed by Voreqe, Leweni, Epeli Ganilau, Epeli Nailatikau. Telling us that they know they have committed an illegal act (a crime) and in the same breath forcing us to accept it and live with it. They have. I wont!. Will you?

The idea that I would one day, in Fiji, have to fight for my right to voice my frustrations against an illegal military regime without the intimidating fear of being beaten up or harassed by the military seemed so far fetched that even now I often stop and wonder how we as a nation got drawn back all the way to our "dark days". (a quote often used by Voreqe claiming that the previous government's policies were taking Fiji back to it's darker days)

The sad fact of the matter is that I and others like myself have taken to the internet to raise our voices against this illegal military regime that has plundered and torn apart our governing body all for their own personal good.
I did not want to risk my life and the lives of my family members to these thugs should my identity be made known, hence my anonymity.
I take my hat off to Seremaia Tui for publicly criticizing the military and their alleged clean up operations. He may have been hunted by the military, or may not have been, but the confusion on whether or not to print this story stinks of military intimidation then anything. Couldn't do all, sorry, blame it on the plethora of cases available.

Not knowing where to start, I thought that the "Hunt for Intelligentsiya" would suit the scene, after all this blogger did not know the availability of such 'internet power' until I saw my friend the Majahhhh on telly promising me that he'd catch these people. Thanks to this free publicity, I and others like me decided to join in and let our voices be heard, especially after my letters to the editor weren't pulished - even though I had toned it down as best I could! :(

We then have the much publicised Felix Anthony board membership saga. In December, the dictator publicly announced that he was going to clean up Fiji of corruption. A hard task, one that a lot of people wanted done - but not by this idiot. He soon proved people's expectations correct by first announcing that "No individual will serve on more then one board" and attacked the likes of Mr Joe Mar for serving on more then 5 boards (I'm not sure about actual number but could have been 9?). There was much publicity by Voreqe and his money man Chaudhry on individuals who served on more then 1 board, and victims of this smear campaign were those such as Mr Joe Mar, Mr Lionel Yee and anyone else they could find. Once they started replacing board members with their own people, they realised that they had erred drastically in the case of Mr Yee's presence on various boards and therefore announced that "ok, now we can have people on more then 1 board".
So much for Voreqe's claims of what "could amount to a conflict of interest and also divert the attention of those who are appointed to the boards."

Whilst we're still on Felix Anthony, remember his public slandering of the two FNPF executives who were told to go on leave pending investigations into alleged corrupt practices. The mainstream media ate it up with the lady executive suffering more since her home just featured in a recent issue of a local magazine. Mr Anthony was very keen to give the media what they wanted, all the 'juicy' details about the real estate this lady owned and her private assets making as much noise as he could about corruption in FNPF.

  Suddenly the silence.

It now appears that the new FNPF board is now in negotiations with the two executives' lawyers on how best to resolve this situation, considering that their investigations have come up with nothing at all. FNPF is now into Damage Control regarding this situation, with everyone watching to see how much the silence of the two executives will cost us.

Can't go without mentioning the Fiji Human Rights debacle - when the international Human Rights Body suspends FHRC's accreditation, and FHRC Director ala coup supporter Shaista Shameem replies "we weren't suspended...we resigned".!!

Then came the grand Great Council of Chief's meeting. With people's expectations soaring, pressure applied on the Great Council and their debate on the Presidential nominee for Vice President. With the name already 'revealed' days before the meeting, the general public were left to wonder over the GCC's reaction to such a nominee and the consequences. We know by now the sequence of events that followed starting with the GCC snubbing the President's nominee. Voreqe and his buddy Epeli Ganilau feigned surprise at this reaction and returned the snubbing by "disbanding" the GCC.
Epeli G states that according to the constitution he has the power to determin who is in the GCC and who shouldn't be. He forgot to mention that he attained this 'power' illegaly !! He forgot to mention that when he tried to attain this power legally in the 2006 elections, his own people didn't vote him in at all!!! Now he's trying to tell the highest indeginous council of the land - our Chiefs - that he will change their membership because they don't agree with his and Voreqe's nominee for Vice President.
The ailing President hasn't been able to convince us all that he understands the gravity of the situation and where Fiji is in now. I say these words with no disrespect to the man, having known the President as Tui Vuda in Vuda village back before the first coup(lewenski, you reading this?). I know that when the late Dr. Bavadra entered politics and won the elections, the village of Vuda was politely split in two with Ratu Iloilo leading the faction that was anti-chaudhry. I stress politely because under Ratu Iloilo's leadership his main aim was to keep the village united in traditional matters whilst respecting individual's political choices - so the village life continued with people tiptoeing over political differences putting their village first. The Ratu Iloilo I knew then would not have supported this tyrant at all - and would have acted sooner and wiser had he been as physically and mentally healthy as the proxy president Peni Nacewa claims.

  Back on track.

The so called Fijian Affairs Epeli Ganilau then claims that he wasn't aware that he could have/should have made a traditional presentation to the Great Council of Chiefs regarding their viewpoint and the illegal administration's "roadmap to democracy". His statements make it clear to the people of this great nation that this self proclaimed expert on fijian tradition and culture - judging from his name alone - was totally blind to the ways of the Great Council of Chiefs and thought that he could get away with dictating to the GCC what their choices should be - instead of approaching them in a humbled manner that could have gotten some points for what he was 'selling'.... could have.

How could someone be in charge of the Fijian Affairs portfolio and still forget the best way to present his case to his Chiefs !! Even if he was illegaly appointed.
They then try damage control via attempts at cooling the rising tensions in the vanua with the reassurance that their actions against the GCC isn't new; as though this would justify their injustice to the indeginous council.

More feeble attempts at damage control with the admission that the GCC body still exists, but that they'll just gazette that the "provisions for the GCC are null and void". The Council still exists, they'll just give themselves the legal powers to change the members so that the new GCC members will be the ones that sing to their tune, not the ones that actually represent their respective Vanuas.

The implications of this ignorant individual tampering with the Vanua and it's Chiefly council is something that doesn't bode well for future investments in this country.

Back to our friend Felix Anthony and his love for publicly slandering people. This time APRIL was the victim and after the smear campaign dust has settled, the results of Felix's witch hunt has now cost the Natadola project their golden icon; world reknown pro golfer Mr Vijay Singh. The millions lost plus potential legal costs to this project will have an impact on us the FNPF members, and posisbly the economy.

Then we have the recent tiff between our military and none other then the US themselves.

It started with Driti's public claims that certain Foreign missions attempted to get him to "incite mutiny before the December coup". This was rubbished by the respective Foreign offices. In the ensuing war of words, Voreqe ordered that the security barriers at the US embassy be removed, with Lewenski joining in As a public relations nightmare, this was one that had sever implications not only for the people of Fiji, but more importantly for the illegal military regime - taken from the perspective of the selfish illegal administration. A cover up damage control team was put into action with a conference for all foreign missions to listen to Vore's drivel about the "roadmap to democracy". Of course as a foreign mission representative at this meeting, you'd not want to say anything controversial so they all had a polite tea party and went about their business.

The US then calls for talks with Vore's office to discuss this removal of the barriers and the threat it posed to them. Now we have the possibility - though faint it may be it still exists - that the US embassy could relocate alltogether to an appropriate place if the barriers are removed. In the short timeframe required for such a move, the best solution would be to operate from an already secure international property belonging to the US that already allows for this office to carry out its functions whilst maintaining US mission standards. This could mean relocation to the nearest US embassy outside Fiji.

I had started writing this before the Fiji TV news article came on about Driti's admission of "reading between the lines" , then followed up on Austalian Network news of how Driti admitted to the australian media interviewer that "it wasn't said outright", but that he "read between the lines and knew what they were saying".
Now the whole world knows for sure the level of intelligence we have in the military. With Driti's skills he might want to assist Lewenski in finding intelligentsiya. Something might rub off.

Then my favourite... the latest..

Travel ban for Suva Mayor: Fijian radio station missquotes the Suva Lord Mayor as saying "They will not do anything to the barriers ..." instead of what he was reported as saying "..the SCC did not have the means to remove the barriers...". Fiji Military Intelligence immediately calls up Suva Lord Mayor to inform him he has been put on the travel ban and is in Voreqe's bad books. I guess the FMI Officer forgot to read the Fiji Times article explaining Suva City Council's stand on the matter. Maybe he should get someone to read it to him, slowly.

Fiji's "Military Intelligence".

An oxymoron if ever there was one.

Fiji's Black Friday

Last month, the Emergency Decree was extended and we suffered another month under the Illegal Military Dictator's rule. As predicted, we are into another month, and they've extended the Emergency Decree again!
This time to suit their purpose of suppressing the pending strike by the Unions over the pay cuts being forced down their throats, and now the GCC falls victim to this illegal dictator's childish, pathetic temperament - unfit for a leader at any level.

The Great Council of Chiefs made a decision to stand by their December meeting resolution regarding the coup of December 5, 2006. This meant they opposed the illegal regime's ruling and recomended a quick return to a democratic elected government based largely on the question of legality of the coup.
One can see in hindsight that the Chief's were remembering their mistake in appointing Ratu Seniloli as Vice President after the 2000 coup, only to have the judicary system find him guilty of taking part in the illegal coup.

As was their right, the Chiefs deliberated over the nominee for Vice President and democratically arrived at the conclusion not to support the President's nomination of an illegaly appointed administration and especially if the nominee is already part of the illegal administration. Their reasons for not supporting the nominee ranged from the illegality of the coup, illegality of the individual nominated participating in the coup and the status of the constitution (taken from various interviews with the respective attendees of this meeting).

As a result of the public 'slap in the face', Voreqe and Epeli Ganilau in separate interviews made it clear to the nation

Their dissapointment at the result (What were they thinking?!)

Their expectation that the GCC would go along with the nomination simply because it was the Presidential nominee

Threatening to replace all the 'influenced' members of the GCC with members 'who are willing to take this country forward' because they didn't agree with the GCC's resolution.

Their SUSPENSION of the GCC with diversion of funds elsewhere in their attempt to erase the GCC and it's members.

Their harrasement of Ratu Timoci Vesikula as a warning to citizens of this country on what to expect from their leadership style.

Besides reminding me of my 5year old daughter stomping and kicking up a fuss because she wasn't allowed ice cream, this behaviour at this level is frightening as one takes into account the power that this illegal regime holds in their hands.

We must never underestimate the power they have, even though they do not have the support of the people of Fiji.

"With great power comes great responsibility."
"With great responsibility comes great accountability."

Driti's claims that he was asked to remove Bainimarama before Dec 5 by foreign diplomatic missions has been refuted by the diplomats themselves and now an escalation of events appear to be looming between the illegal military regime and the respective embassies. The citizens will only suffer more hardship if this happens and is not dealt with now.

The illegal regime need to consider that they have nothing, literally nothing to back them up - they are not in power through legal means, they do not have the mandate of the people, and worst of all they do not seem to have a plan at all. Their claims at having a roadmap have been rubished by their immature attempts at leadership.
Yes ok they do have their guns and that is what's keeping them untouched ... so far.

With the military's latest attempt to establish their authority with the USA giants; they have only shown the world the quality of their mentality, their leadership skills, and diplomacy. Instead of using alternative means of communicating with these foreign representatives via the Foreign Affairs ministry, they've decided to go public - Voreqe's usual M.O for dealing with pressure situations. As the media laps this up, one is left to wonder whatever happened to their illegal interim Foreign Affairs Minister who should have dealt with this situation - hang on, wasn't this individual also the Presidential nominee for Vice President?

Well it appears that the Chiefs have been proven correct to reject the nominee, after all how could this person be accepted as Vice President if he couldn't even handle diplomacy at this level?

Maybe it's because this nominee has taken off with a group of other illegal administrators to the EU to beg for more money? A matter of priorities perhaps.

I am puzzled as to how they believe that the EU will hand over millions of dollars to an administration that has been

Rejected by the indeginous Chiefly council representation

Lacks the support of the people.

Not to mention that it's an ILLEGAL administration.

And there is no gurantee that this illegal regime will stay in power long enough to justify the investment!

I had stated previously in my early posts that we're currently being run by a dictator. It appears that there is agreement with that point and by the looks of it, this Dictator is becoming bolder and letting the power get to his head.

For those of you who still believe in the cause of this coup, ask youselves these questions:

Are you doing this out of your personal hatred for the SDL/FLP government? Is that what drives you to agree with this illegal administration and their dictator?

Are you doing this because you're protecting your interests that were threatened by SDL/FLP government? Does this protection justify ALL that has occured since 5th of December? Does this country deserve to suffer all that it has and more ?

Are you supporting this false clean up because you were a victim of the SDL/FLP policies? Was this resort the correct one? Have you exhausted all other aveneus?

If you answered yes to any of the above try the following - isolate your disagreement or hatred of the previous govt, isolate your personal insecurity and look at the events that have occured since December 5.
Strip away your hatred for the previous Government, strip away the personal insecurity, strip away the politics and look at what's left. Look at what's occured since December 5 and where it has taken this country.

Is Voreqe the leader that you wanted?

Is it all justified?

The Art of Deflection

As the attention of the world is drawn to the illegal regime's global humiliation in their failure to secure the respect and endorsement of the Great Council of Chiefs, the illegal regime's best tactic is deflection, deflect the attention from the public failure with some juicy or shocking news that will keep the public's attention away from their public failure!

This came in various forms today - Thursday 12 April.

The first is the allegation that the Ambassadors of UK, US, and Australia had approached Voreqe's thug Pita Driti to stage a mutiny. When it comes down to it, it's simply a matter of his word against that of the honourable, government appointed Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, United States and Australia.

This pathetic show only serves to prove how desperate the illegal interim administration is in their attempt at pointing fingers elsewhere to make up for their lack of proof of any corruption in the SDL/FLP government. This distraction is an attempt to cause a stir in the rural Fijian community, whose leaders have just turned their back on the illegal regime - and rightfully so. This news is an attempt to tar the embassies and those foreign bodies that speak out for the return to democracy - after all Driti and co can not force these people to the nearest army installation for an 'exercise in diplomacy'.

The best option open to the illegal regime is publicly snob the respective embassies and make it appear as though Voreqe is in charge of these ambassadors. Another weak attempt at impressing the rural community.
As the US Ambassador stated, the US "wants the RFMF to return to the barracks, stay out of politics and public institutions, lift the state of emergency, stop interfering in the lives of ordinary Fijians, the judiciary and other accountable institutions."

Believe me; we the people of Fiji also want exactly that!

The second deflection by this illegal regime is their sell of the EU Meeting outcome - even before they leave for the EU. The notorious former ousted prime minister Chaudhry claims that he is positive the EU will give them the $350 mill for sugar industry restructure. This is the latest attempt to sell the idea that the EU supports this illegal regime. The EU has its rules and regulations and although we as a people have been told that the EU wants the country to go to democratic elections as soon as possible, it doesn't necessarily mean that the EU will hold off on the money. In fact due to the work done by the previous pre-coup Foreign Affairs ministry (again I stress that I'm not pro sdl) this money could be given to us if they utilise the framework proposed for the use of this aid. There is the talk that the ADB regional staff have somewhat influence over the EU opinion, besides the local EU office.

Some light must be shed regarding this aid money - it must be made clear that the proposal for the money IS NOT the illegal regime's work but that of the previous governments! It IS NOT because the EU believes in the illegal regime that they've tolerated the trip, but because EU must be seen as being impartial to local politics and stay true to assistance promised the previous democratic government.

The debate on whether this illegal regime will stay in power long enough to ensure proper deployment and utilisation of these funds are matters that the EU should consider greatly. The political climate in Fiji has now receded to an all time low with the recent developments by the illegal regime. Those in the EU should note that the people of this great country can only tolerate so much before they start reacting, and when this happens, no one knows what the extent of the consequences will be.

Why do you think the military keep hiding behind the "Emergency Decree"?!.

The third deflection is one that may slip under the radar but for the fact that this is provided by board members that were put in place by the illegal regime. A new movie is to be shot in Fiji from 23 April. As you may well know, this work was done by the previous board - whose Chairman and board members were respected members of the international community.
The public must be made to understand that like any civil service department, even though the members of the board have been replaced the work commitments signed off by previous board must be held up or the new board would have to face severe financial and legal penalties to say the least. The peddling of this new movie as the new board's work is a poor attempt to dupe the public into believing that something good is coming out of this evil!

Their fourth attempt at deflection, as unexpected as it may have been to them, is their attempt at turning the citizen's mind away from supporting the one last group that stands in their way - the Great Council of Chiefs.

The illegally appointed self proclaimed "anti corruption cleaner" Voreqe has suspended all GCC meetings labeling them a "threat to national security".
In his speech delivered in RFMF Mess Hall in his usual military uniform, the dictator started with "My Government...." to tell the nation that the decision was his to stop all further GCC meetings. He then went on to add that he was doing it for the good of the nation!

An obvious sign of dictatorship, selfishness and disregard for public or national interest. None but his own. Note that his speeches in early Dec started with "we have decided..." which changed from a plural to singular context soon after to "I have decided..." , "...my government...", "it is my wish..." and more - as though he has the right to speak on my behalf or yours.
Further proof of the dictatorship in this illegal regime.

This suspension only furthers the cause for justice and democracy in this country.

What Voreqe claimed the previous SDL/FLP government would do with their Qoliqoli Bill and other radical bills, he has done with this coup - he has taken Fiji back to the dark ages.

This last gasp attempt at enforcing their rule upon the multitudes, upon the indigenous Chiefs of this land, upon the poor coup victims, has only served to prove to the world that Voreqe DOES NOT have the support of the people of Fiji. Were this another country there'd be an increase in the number of citizens venting their frustrations out on those that oppress them. Were this another people, there'd be blood in the streets.

But this is Fiji; a land where the indigenous were forced to coexist with other nationalities and they adapted gracefully as is their nature. A land where the unique indigenous culture has thrived, whilst allowing others to thrive also. A land where racialism only exists in the corridors of power and politics, not amongst the rural citizens. Don't believe, travel through Labasa/Savusavu or even the western side to see for yourself. A land where the Fijians are slow to anger and quick to forgive.

This characteristic has been the trump of this illegal regime. They have abused this and counted on the indigenous being themselves and have in every way possible used the threat of violence, public degradation and even death to quell any possible uprising they might face.
For sadly as a fellow non indigenous citizen of mine put it; "this coup is about pitting Fijian against Fijian, whilst Chaudhry rips us all off".

It is time for the people of this country to say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!". For the sake of this country, listen to the Great Council of Chiefs. Use their recomendations as a roadmap to bring this country back to democracy and peace. Their consultation must be sought and advice followed for any lasting peaceful resolution to be achieved.

To the members of the EU - Please take into consideration the political climate of this country should the illegal regime denounce the indigenous authority of the people. You can see now what proof of corruption these people have. You can see for yourselves the lack of support they have from the ordinary citizen to the Chiefs. You can see for yourselves the desperate attempts at re-establishing control over this nation. Your money will not be wisely spent should you give it.

There is no guarantee that this illegal regime will stay in power long enough.

Not if the people have anything to say about it.

Great Council

I've been busy lately with family, work and basic survival and am now only able to put foward this short piece after all that's happened. What a great Easter weekend, bad for my blood pressure but good for rugby lovers worldwide. My heartfelt congratulations to the Fiji Sevens team. The doubt I had in the Fiji team after the game against the great Tongan team is similar to the doubt I had when the GCC met yesterday.
The jubilation at the end of the Tongan game is similar to the experience I had when I heard of the stand of the GCC, hence this article.

-------------------------

Great Council.

When the GCC met in December 2006 to deliberate on the implications of the coup and compiled their advice in a list of directives and recommendations to the coup leader Voreqe, their conclusion was that the coup was illegal and that Voreqe return Fiji to democracy by either reinstating the previous govt, or hold an election. I'm not too sure about the actual details - can't find that Fiji Times I was keeping for this very matter. I do recall however the statements made by Voreqe - "Chiefs should just have a meeting and drink grog..." whilst the failed political party of Ganilau, Sukanaivalu, Korovulavula were recorded as saying that the "Chiefs list should be given to Santa" regarding the list of recomendations the Chiefs put foward to Voreqe and his coup criminals.

These words came back to bite them where it hurts when the great Marama na Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Kepa spoke in the GCC meeting yesterday - Wednesday 11th April. The public humiliation and degradation that the GCC suffered at the 'mouth' of the military dictator Voreqe and his henchmen Ganilau opened up a rift in the indigenous people. As of December 5, their way of life was ridiculed, stomped on and trashed by this illegal regime. Every Fijian born in this country is taught their identity, their cultural way of life which is deeply founded on respect and leadership.

This was thrown to the wind when the existence and purpose of their very own hierarchial council was questioned and publicly ridiculed.

This great council was established to provide an indigeous voice in the leadership of this country, allowing indigenous Fijians the benefit initially denied the indigenous Maoris, denied the Aboriginals of Australia, denied the indigenous American Indians. The adaption of the Western democracy model to allow the indigenous voice to be heard, respected and where possible followed, is Fiji's version of democracy. A version that of course may need revision, and may need tuning along the way, but a version nevertheless that worked towards protecting the indigenous culture, people and their way of life whilst accepting a democratic way of life to coexist with other peoples, cultures and the ever changing social structure of this multi-cultural pacific nation.

This was thrown away with the onslaught of injustice brought about by the December 5th coup - the biggest culprits being chiefs themselves - Epeli Ganialu, Epeli Natilatiku, Voreqe (claims to the Ratu title).

Rejected chiefs.

Now the very people who ridiculed this establishment of Chiefs and their advisors have become dependant on the same council to push forward their pawn in their evil scheme of taking total control of Fiji. The endorsement of the GCC for the Vice President's nominee would seal their status in the eyes of the indigenous people - the very people whose identity and way of life was ridiculed by these arrogant treasonous criminals.

The GCC's rejection of the Presidential nominee speaks volumes of the integrity of this council.

Although some will claim that the rejection centered on the council's own agenda and personal politics, it has become obvious to the nation that the stand of the GCC since their December meeting has been one geared towards bringing this country forward by restoring it as soon as possible to a democratically elected Government, in as peaceful a manner as possible. Their opposition to the illegal regime has been admirable, especially when one considers the personal cost to their status, lives and families.

The recent shady attacks on the GCC Chairman Ratu Ovini Bokini is one obvious ploy in the illegal regime's attempt to ursurp this respectable authority before the scheduled GCC meeting. The fact that one of the ring leaders of this attack was allowed to leave the country even though his name was on the Immigration Watchlist implicates some darker involvement of the authorities in this matter. The Director's claim that he let the culprit go because there was "something funny with the ban on him" speaks volumes of the integrity of the shady attackers of Ratu Ovini Bokini, the 'interim director' of Immigration and the department's integrity in allowing a person to depart the country even though his name is on the watchlist. The implications this will have on other friends of the Director whose names appear on the watchlist is frightening to say the least - particularly for the countries of destinations these said individuals were to visit. I do wonder if the US is paying close attention to the apparent lax in our country's immigration border control.

The illegal military regime has now failed at their various undertakings regarding the GCC with their

weak attempt at undermining the respected chairman's position as Tui Tavua

failed attempt at cooercing the various provinces to their cause

public failed attempt at winning the respect of the GCC to endorse their nominee for future President of Fiji.

They have now taken the high ground with the typical response of not acknowledging the GCC, with Epeli Ganilau even going as far, on Fijian radio this morning, as to feign surprise at the manner in which the GCC questioned the legality of the coup.

He was quoted in today's daily as saying that the chiefs should "accept what has happened and move fiji forward".
He then threatens to throw out any Chief in the Council who refuses to agree with the illegal military regime.
This from a man who's own people DID NOT vote him into government.
This from a man who doesn't even rule his own province.
This from a man who was unemployed before the coup and is now taking up an ILLEGAL post in the Fijian Affairs.

Latest broadcast [12 April] from the Fiji Radio Station is that this same man is looking at legally changing the composition of the Great Council of Chiefs. He has now raised questions regarding Ro Teimumu's appointment into the Great Council.

Now even Voreqe's getting on the bandwagon about getting the Chiefs to see it their way - the illegal military regime's way or not at all.

This man is obviously either very very desperate, very very stupid, or very very both.

"Our Fiji today is a new Fiji where individual freedom is protected and not a Fiji solely for Fijians. Wise decisions from this august house will promote multiracial harmony and true friendship."

Excerpt from voreqe's speech to Great Council of Chiefs in 2005

As the GCC meets again today to discuss our country's next president, the nation waits with anticipation, anxiety and dread. We all hope and pray that the GCC will stand up to the illegal regime and continue their stand for progress towards democracy and freedom. Whilst on the other hand, somewhere deep in the back of our minds, we know that this GCC decision could easily be overturned or ignored by the illegal military regime should the GCC continue to stand up against the illegal regime. We know that there is nothing to stop the illegal military regime from pushing their presidential pawn through their judicial pawn(s) and somehow legalise this. We know that the illegal regime will most probably just go ahead and ignore the council of the peoplel, ignore the voice of the people.

Yet we dare to hope and cling to that ideal that the Great Council of Chiefs will stand firm in their resolve to advice this illegal military regime to return this country to democracy as soon as possible, and return the power to the people of this great nation.

For even if the Great Council of Chiefs make the right decision for the people, only the people can show this illegal regime of failed politicians and criminals that we want them out!

I call upon you to make your stand known today. Email us your acknowledgement, recomendations, support or let a friend know. That's the start to getting these illegal criminals in power out so you and I can have a say in who leads this nation foward into the next year, not forward into the 'cannibalistic' era.

[read a fellow blogger's article on same topic]

Propaganda techniques - Part I

I have been accused of over sensationalising the issues of this coup in this country by "anonymous" along with writing like a teenager. Thank you for your comments, please email me so we can discuss this further.

I write in my own "teenage" fashion to help expose the Propaganda techniques used by the Illegal Military Regime to make their presence in this country more "acceptable". As we all know in Fiji, once it becomes "acceptable" it's almost certain they'll be here to stay.

If you need an explanation in propaganda, read this article from a fellow blogger.

Bear with me as I uncover the techniques of propaganda being used against us the people of Fiji by this illegal military regime!

1/ Bait n Switch:
This technique is a two phase one - Bait the people in with an attractive positive sounding idea or scheme, then once they've been reeled in, switch your approach with the real meaning - one that usually won't be acceptable to them in the first place if they knew what it was all about!

Bait:2 year Pre-coup campaign to clean up government, all for anti-corruption with constant public statements by military commander on political issues (remember when he was telling the people of Fiji NOT to vote SDL back in power?), allegations of "massive corruption in government", allegations of "corrupt practices". A big sell to the public using media to voice out anti-corruption agenda with the key sell of minimum disruption to the people - "Won't take long", "peaceful transition", "bloodless coup", "interest of national security".

Switch: After December 5 takeover illegal military regime loads the media with emphasis on "roadmap to democracy" with a first 2 year timeframe and then a 3 year timeframe (they miscalculated the ammount of money required to pay off bad debt?).
Gone are the "peaceful transition" statements 3 month later, what ever happened to "bloodless coup" ?
And more importantly, the illegal military regime have NO PROOF to show for their allegations of corruption that link SDL government to any shady dealings. They have nothing to show for their claims, but instead cement themselves into the illegal administration as "Interim" Ministers, Judiciary, Prisons, FNPF, FIRCA, and other bodies relevant to their cause. [read this article for further clarification]

2/ Repetition:

"But the most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly and with unflagging attention. It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over."
Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, p. 184

"The purpose of propaganda is not to provide interesting distraction for blasé young gentlemen, but to convince the masses. But the masses are slow moving, and they always require a certain time before they are ready even to notice a thing, and only after the simplest ideas are repeated thousands of times will the masses finally remember them."
Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, p. 185

The illegal military regime's repetition of "move fiji forward", "peace and stability", "unknown elements", "roadmap to ..." , "anti corruption", "lesser of two evils", "law and order", "interest of national security", "protect the people of Fiji" has been repeated over and over again as much as "ahhh" has been in a certain spokesperson's interviews! This is based on the simple fundamental principle of repetition and how it affects a human's automatic perception of the truth. Hitler's words quoted above show how vulnerable the masses are to this sort of thing. What you need to do is ask yourself the question -

Are the propaganda phrases becoming acceptable or more acceptable to you then they were in December?

I leave you with another phrase the explains it all:

"If a lie is repeated enough times, it would become widely accepted as the truth."

Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda

3/ Using Celebrities:
In a Fiji Village article Bainimarama states publicly that he "understands that" the 7s team has prepared well, "he'd like them to know" that the people of fiji are behind them...
He is trying to make it sound like he's speaking on behalf of all of us - you and me! And in mentioning his well wishes for Serevi and team he's trying to make it appear that Serevi's on his side! Even though we know that Serevi isn't political and prefers not to comment on the situation - as further confirmed by another "anonymous"! This example can also be used in the "Transference" technique. I'll cover that later in Part II.
This is a common technique and it has failed them in the past - Dr Nandan's endorsement of Bainimarama , "Shyster" Shameem's endorsement of the Dec 05 events, Transparency International's sudden activity against corruption, Leweni's speeches about human rights, civil rights and military investigations to name a few.
Don't let this work on you! Be aware of the work that they are doing to quietly manipulate your thoughts into accepting Bainimarama as your spokesperson. Or Leweni. Or Driti.

4/ Vagueness:
The vagueness of their claims and allegations of corruption and corrupt practices by the SDL led government that led to "corrupt practices being accepted as the normal way to do business in Fiji" have no standing in any court of law because of one important factor - NO PROOF! These people have violated the fundamental rule of law - innocent until proven guilty - and have tried their very best to convince us that they're right in their allegations.
Before the coup, VB was hurling accusations left right and center about known elements in government who were perpertrators of the 2000 Coup - Yet since the coup NO ONE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO JUSTICE for this! (what justice?). To this date NO ONE HAS BEEN BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT FOR CORRUPT PRACTICES - Not one person in SDL or the SDL Government!
To further prove my point, they have raided SDL offices, even Pacific Connex offices and have "obtained more evidence" according to their mayjahhh Lewenski, but nothing has been compiled in a court of law - Don't you think that since they now own the courts, they'd be the first to show us the proof they have if any?????
It only follows that as they had no proof, still have no proof, and didn't look like they were able to obtain any proof at all - they set up their own "Anti Corruption Unit" to pry into the affairs of all citizens on the allegations of corruption.
This Unit duplicates the function of the Auditor General's Office, Economic Crime Unit (Police), Ministry of Home Affairs (Intelligence gathering, case compliation of national security issues) and if their bill is passed in Parliament - this Unit will be given the right to take apart our civil rights all based on a single allegation!!! Watch this space for more on this Unit's promised power!
What do you have to do to earn their interest? Anyone can complain about you (with or without proof) and they will earmark you based on your $$$$ income and how much they can use this in the media to justify their initial allegations of "Corrupt Practices" of the SDL led government. Even if you're not part of Government, they'll try to find a tie in back to Govt- either through Immigration puppet, or some FTIB screw up!

5/ Plain Folks:
This technique is to use ordinary folks and make it appear that they the illegal military regime is made up of ordinary citizens like YOU and ME.
This technique has been used since January with regular articles in the Fiji Times and other newspapers on members of the illegal regime who pose and appear as ordinary folks making it big "for the people of Fiji". Note that these articles in no way talk about the horrors of the illegal military regime, but make it appear that this "plain folk" is just like you and me. The best examples are those of failed politicians of the NAPF that have appeared in the Fiji Times. These articles do not talk about how these people were NOT voted in by their own people! It doesn't talk about how these people's ideas for their interim "ministries" are NOT sanctioned by the people of Fiji!! It certainly doesn't talk about what these "ordinary" folks have to say about the murders and beatings done by their boss!
Don't believe me? Watch this weekend's dailies for such articles as those that appeared in previous dailies - [1], [2] and tell me i'm wrong (this is one case where i'm hoping i'm wrong). they'll probably just shift the dates of publication.

*--*

Therein lies today's lesson on propaganda techniques utilised by this illegal military regime in their attempt to justify their illegal coup and reason for existence!

Please feel free to educate me also on the matter or even better - share your experience on the subject with me and we can discuss how to better present this to the masses.

There are a few other items that may need to be written up, so don't worry - Part II coming out soon with more techniques and how this illegal military regime is using it against us the people of Fiji.

Don't let them get the better of you!

To Sir-evi and the boys

I thought it appropriate to break the mood with a more positive message of hope and unity.

To the King of Sevens Waisale Serevi and the Fiji 7s team leaving for the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, I would like to wish you all the very best and may you and the team play your very best out there. of four coups in Fiji's history.

The renowned literary academic and former politician is now adding his own literature to our state of affairs.

Dr Satendra Nandan - here speaking at a corruption seminar today says even in the lead up to the military takeover, too many said too little.

The academic says this has led to whats now called a consultant culture in the country.

No stranger to political turmoil, the former politician initially served in parliament under the NFP banner in 1982 before switching to Labour in 1986.

As health minister in the month-long Bavadra government that was forced out at the barrel of the gun in 1987 Dr Nandan has described this takeover as a necessary evil.

Unlike other academics, he holds a different view of the December 5th takeover.

Dr Nandan says there are always compromises and sacrifices between right and wrong.

Democracy Dr Nandan says always means different things to different countries but in our case, he adds, its no longer the difference between good and evil, but evil and a lesser evil."

Excuse me but that's just way too much BS for me not too react to.

Let's have a look at the esteemed writer's analogy.

1. "The Lesser of two evils" ???

This is the most common phrase used by Voreqe and his merry men to describe the coup in their weak attempt to justify their actions so much so that his whole statement reeks of military influence.

Read these articles to see the truth for yourself

2. "the best of four coups in Fiji's history".

Would the learned Dr care to explain his definition for "BEST" ?

Which coup is best for this country ? Haven't we learnt anything from our previous coups?

With the decline in economic conditions and more dark economic weather forecasted by our economic experts - all because of the coup - how does one logically argue that this is the best for this country?

Our hotels are still operating on reduced staff with reduced hours - talk to any of the hotels in Denarau and they'll tell you that, some even at 40% staff. still think it's the best?

Unemployment just increased because of the coup - the slight decrease in the unemployment figures due to the re-employment of unemployed loser politicians didn't put a dent in it. How is this the "best" again?

3. "a necessary evil"
He now acknowledges the coup as EVIL.
    But Necessary ????

How necessary is it to kill two people, beat up civilians, sexually harrase females, detain families, in the name of "EVIL" ?

How necessary is it to increase the unemployment in this country in the name of "EVIL"

How necessary is it to abuse the law, place one's self above the law in the name of "EVIL"

How necessary is it to deny the citizens of Fiji the right to discuss this openly in public, deny us the right to express our opinions in public in the name of "EVIL".

If what Voreqe is doing is right, then why does he have to hide behind an AMNESTY DECREE ?

If what Voreqe is doing is right, then why does he have to SHELVE MURDER INVESTIGATIONS ?

4. "sacrifices between right and wrong".

Where were you when Sakiusa Rabaka was murdered by the military?

Where were you when Nimilote Verebasaga was murdered by the military?

How many more must be sacrificed for this "EVIL".

How many more people must suffer and their rights be sacrificed for this "EVIL" whilst the previously unemployed politicians lap up their illegally gained salaries?

The only sacrifice this country needs to make is to rid itself of this military regime and their supporters.

5. "democracy means different things to different countries".

I take a page out of Voreqe's idol's book

General Musharraf and his version of democracy

Another link regarding Musharraf shows a lot of similarity with what we're going through today people!

6. I've saved the best for last...
    "Commander most modern day leader"
If by modern day leader you mean

Leadership values shown by forcing his senior officers to sign their allegance to him or leave the military. When his contract was up for renewal, he forced the government to renew it at the threat of a coup and dismissed the top 5 ranking military officers for refusing to help him draw up coup plans that he intended to use as his bargaining chip. Needless to say that his contract has been extended since the December take over.

Leadership skills that caused a rift in the RFMF ignored by him until an attempt at a coup by his own military personnel was staged in 2000. Four soldiers were murdered by his loyal soldiers and these murderers have not been brought to justice to this day.

Leadership skills shown in his stint as President of Fiji Rugby Union by threatening to step down if FRU did not get rid of a rival individual. Needless to say FRU stood by the individual and he was left with no choice but to step down. That individual is now in a major team for the FRU flying Fiji's flag and hopes on the international arena for a positive Fiji image, whilst this "modern day leader" has made himself the laughing stock of the globe and favourite "bati ni tanoa" joke by his own people!

[read this article to find out more about it]

Leadership skills that recently made him promise that judges would also take 5% cut, and only to have his appointee counter that? And another appointee apologise nationwide about it and rescind the modern day leader's pledge? What a great modern day leader he must be!!! So great that you can read what the people of Fiji have to say about him

Leadership skills that allowed 22 military finance department officers to run a finance scam under his nose BEFORE the coup! (of course there hasn't been any "leaks" to the media about updates to this story).

The only skill he's been good at is utilisation of the media to present his case even though legal channels and forums were available to him for his views to be aired. These channels were available to all other citizens also!

other skills he's good at...multiple accounts of foot in mouth disease since 2000

showing to the nation and the world the sad level of intelligence behind the uniform.

the inability to pronounce "renumeration" on national television correctly. "remuneration" :) couldn't help myself :) one from the bati ni tanoa ...

the list goes on and on and on....

It is blatantly obvious that this Dr Nandan has been cooerced as part of the military's strategy for propaganda battle against the academics and the like.
To address those in the higher echelons of intelligence, something that's way out of reach for our current military dictator, the military propaganda machinery needs to put a different face to their music.

Do not be surprised people that as time goes by the military will be putting out associates of their illegal interim administration to make public statements like these in their attempt to influence the people of this great country.

But fear not, the battle is not over. For as long as this Dictator rules this country this voice of freedom will not rest until him and others like him are removed from power.

Will you help?

Military Dictator Rules Fiji... for another month...

Do not be fooled people, we are being ruled by a dictator - not the "interim government". If you took the time to evaluate all that's happened so far since the December take over, hopefully your eyes will open up to the reality that is destroying our Fiji, our way of life.

"A military dictatorship is a form of government in which absolute power is concentrated in a repressive ruler or a small clique who use military and police power to dominate the people mentally and physically. The dictator either seizes power directly, or creates an environment of fear and chaos and offers himself up as the liberator from the current cycle of evil."

Is this begining to sound familiar people?

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Hermann Goering, President of the Reichstag,
Nazi Party, and Luftwaffe Commander in Chief.

The dictator uses repeated propaganda to reach out to the masses and quells any uprising with a show of unopposed physical force in order to divide the people; thereby conquering them.

For as long as there are people out there who fall in behind the military regime, the country will always be in conflict in whatever form that conflict may take.

Those of you who still believe that this coup by Bainimarama is justified and is the right way to go: Please understand that history is being repeated here, not just Fiji's coup culture history, but the history of Rome (Cicero), Germany (Hitler), Pakistan (Musharraf), Iraq (Saddam).

You know Fiji's ruled by a military regime when:

The military is used as the primary force to control the civil population in violation of the nations constitution.

With beatings, torture and even deaths used to scare the populace into submission. All this being done whilst they swear publicly to "uphold the constitution".

The military utilise the tools of propaganda to reach out to the masses in an attempt to sanction their actions and sway the majority their way.

A certain radio station with the military appointed announcer marketing Voreqe's work aimed mainly at the rural hard working citizen.

National newspapers are not following up on articles that expose the faults of the military led regime ever since the military paid the dailies a "visit".

Pro military articles in our dailies from personal profiles of their military appointed personnel, leaks about ongoing "confidential audit investigations" (witch hunts) that are illegal by nature, to straight forward propaganda articles with the same sing song phrases of "move Fiji forward", "peace and stability in the country", "don't disturb the peace", "rid us of corruption"...if you can think of any more email me please and I'll add it in. I'd like to compile a list of the military propaganda catch phrases so people become more aware of these when reading it in the dailies.

Remember the military's public campaign against the former CEO Finance Mr Paula Uluinaceva? Lewenski declared him a "wanted man" for officially reducing the military spending budget to F$10,000 per month - before the coup!. Mr Uluinaceva was a victim of a public witch hunt led by none other then the military dictator himself wich caused this gentleman and his family to go into hiding untill he was sure his family would not be harmed by the military's brutal arm of enforcers. He was later replaced by another military appointee. The budget for militar spending was needless to say left alone. This is only an example taken from the many that have occured since the December take over.

The military continue to suppress the people whilst working around the legislation to protect themselves;

"Presidential decree" grants amnesty to the military dictator and his soldiers for all their wrong doings. Note that this presidential document is coming out of an office that's surrounded by military personnel right up to the President's secretary. Questions about authentication of the Presidential signature have resulted in investigations into the lives of those who dared to "speak out against the President." Any public hints of this is dealt with by a visit to the military HQ. Mr Keneth Zinck can testify to that, along with the respected lawyer who's been publishing articles regarding the (il)legality of the coup.

The removal of the VICE PRESIDENT himself after he sent out a formal memo denouncing the coup. This presidential statement apparently clarified the fact that the Presidential office was not in support, repeat DID NOT CONDONE, the coup. After the removal of the Vice President there was a public statement read from the president's office that the President supported the coup - in a language that differed from previous Presidential statements. Obviously the speech writer had changed or been replaced.

Emergency Decree still in place, extended every month. This decree prevents the public from speaking out against the atrocities that this military regime is causing by intimidating the public with silent threats of "visits to army HQ" for some "exercises". The decree denies the individual their right of free speech, public assembly and everything else the military can think of to quell any possible public show of rebellion or uprising as shown in recent articles. Anyone who does so is labelled as "disturbing the peace and stability of this country". We all know who's really doing that don't we!

The military dictator takes total control of agencies that could pose a threat to this regime, and agencies that will enhance the propaganda and build his empire.

Public denouncement of the Great Council of Chiefs - the indigenous people's highest ranking body of rulers second only to their leader the President. The military dictator publicly scorned the Great Council of Chiefs in his post-coup press releases and the removal of the GCC appointed Vice President.

Military appointed Chief of Police. Removal of Police Commisioner Hughes and other top policemen who publicly opposed the coup replaced by military appointed personnel. The military appointed Chief of Police later announced that the Police was no longer going to investigate the military dictator Voreqe Bainimarama for his involvement in the deaths of the crw soldiers in 2000, for his treasonous statements made against the elected government, for him and his men's involvement in the illegal removal of arms shipment from the wharf just before the coup.

Military appointed head of Prisons to prevent any possible chance of having him or his men ending up there. As the Prisons department doesn't pose a direct threat to the illegal regime, the only reason he'd have this take over is to remove completely any trace or possibility of a legal lashback on him and his men for their illegal actions in 2000[military deaths] to the 2006 coup.

Military removal of Justice Fatiaki and quick replacement with a certain anti-SDL judge. Being in charge of the judiciary allows the military regime to carry out tasks they want to and bend the law to suit themselves - as seen by the recent Nabua roundabout saga.

Military removal of all senior government personnel who have been seen as pro-SDL, or simply anti-coup. Personnel that have not been cooperative with the military regime since the coup have also been removed. Under the guise of re-structuring the government, all senior CEOs were sent away - except of course that of the Dictators "favourite advisor".

Military appointed Director of Immigration. This department was needed by the dictator to place travel bans on civilians they label as a "threat to the stability of the nation". Somehow the military men never ended up on this list. This list was some 5000 in January 2007 and according to sources from the Immigraition department, the increase was by some 2000 names post-coup. To make the list one had to be removed by the military from their post, speak out in public against this military regime, or just be disliked by military personnel or their relatives.

Military appointed appointee for head of Audit Team to "investigate corruption" in all and any government body thay may come under the microscope. Whilst this Audit Team (more like WitchHunt Wackos) have publicly spoken out about allegations of mismanagement of funds in various bodies, they have failed to update the public on the finance scam that was going on under the nose of the dictator himself at the RFMF Finance department. There were at least 22 people sent on "a break" [Lewenski strikes again] from the RFMF's finance section because of "discrepancies" with the FNPF payments. The investigations, according to our military source, were uncovered by FNPF when they realised that there were staff members who were getting paid more FNPF money then their annual salaries. As the FNPF is a percentage of the annual salary, it appeared based on the data presented by FNPF that these staff members were being paid two annual salaries, thereby having two FNPF deductions for every pay. This was picked up by diligent FNPF staff since most of the finance team at RFMF were involved in this. To date, there has not been any updates public or otherwise of what happened to the second annual salary that these RFMF finance team members were deducting from. Who was getting that second pay and why hasn't anything been done about it? Further proof that the military have influenced the media is the lack of follow up reporting on this interesting item since it made it's way to the Fiji Times on Feb 26.

Military removal of anti-coup or pro elected-government personnel in various statutory bodies and their Boards. The list is too numerous to name, but we all know those boards and who they are. I'm sure those citizens are awaiting the return of law and order so they may proceed with legal proceedings against Voreqe and his bunch of merry men.

Public show of support for the military by the no longer respected head of Fiji Human Rights Commision. This Director of FHRC is no longer respected publicly and internationally with her blatantly biased pro-coup propaganda. When she tried to play down and justify the military beatings and deaths of civilians - she publicly crossed the line and no one can doubt that she's been corrupted by the military regime. This corruption seems to have been coerced before the coup as part of the planning for this, which completely makes her a part of the illegal military regime.

Public show of support for the coup by losing political party National Alliance Party of Fiji (NAPF). Their spokesperson was quoted post-coup in the dailies as stating that "the GCC's list to the military should be sent to Santa" in reply to the list of actions the GCC presented to Commander Bainimarama in the quest for peace and stability. These demands were similar to those presented in the EPG report. Not surprisingly members of this party now hold ministerial posts in the military "interim government". These include Interim Minister for Transport Mr. Manu Korovulavula (5.57% of first count votes only), Interim Minister for Fijian Affairs Epeli Ganilau, Interim Minister for Education Netani Sukanaivalu (6.15% of first count votes only). If I've missed out on some names it's really because i'm just too tired to research it. Check elections web site for more information.

The shocking silence of the interim ministers in light of the two deaths of civilians at military hands. To date not one of this ministers have spoken out against the deaths, even those who claim to follow a religious lifestyle! What type of religion will condone the beating to death of a human being? When these ministers pray next time one wonders what they're praying for?

The military dictator continues to remind people of their status in the society with public show of force or more subtle means of persuasion

We still have road blocks; even if it's operated by the police as they claim it will be, there are still roadblocks in place, with no justifiable reason to have it in place.

Military dictator continues to give his illegal Interim Prime Minister addresses from the military army base dressed in military uniform.

Military appointed head of Immigration gives his TV interviews dressed in full naval commander gear.(This is in case they mistake him in the Immigration office for a passport-seeking civilian).

Military appointed Teleni does likewise for his meetings with public media and civilians alike. Of course Driti and Lewenski are in their military gear be it as military spokesperson or Ministry of Agriculture consultant.

Military 'advisors' hold 'discussions' with members of the media who are seen as being too anti-coup in their articles. As a result the media organisations have to tone down their reporting in order for their business to survive, despite publicly declaring themselves as free of military intimidation.

Not to forget the extensive harrasement, abuse, sexual abuse, torture and sadly eventually deaths of civilians since the December take over. This is the worst ever abuse of human rights that Fiji has had init's short history, and ranks amongst the worst in the South Pacific.

I could go on and on people, but this article will then become too comprehensive and the main points would become lost in the volume of attrocities that these people have committed against us and our nation.

I appeal to you the people of Fiji, think about these facts that have been presented before you make your mind up about the military dictator.
Don't let someone else do the thinking for you.

When you finally see the light let this regime know that they do NOT have your support.

Can you in good conscience read this and do nothing?

If you still believe that Voreqe Bainimarama and his military puppets are the "lesser of two evils" please let me know - and allow me to persuade you to see the truth for what it is.

"None are more hopelessly enslaved than
those who falsely believe they are free."

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Military Regime rules Fiji

The extension of the Emergency decree finally reached the news today, 5 days after it made it on intelligentsiya.

Whilst the Military regime is "appealing" to the unionists not to destabilise this country's "progress" on one hand, the other hand is still enforcing the rule of military law with the Emergency decree in place till the end of March.

I'd like to be proven wrong on this one, but my bets are that the Emergency decree will be extended again in April to dissuade any public show of rebellion against this military regime. shouts out to the people of this country that our woes and sufferings are not being ignored by our Pacific neighbours.

As our civil servants begin their plans for strike action against the illegal military regime, we all heard Leweni's threat of military action guised in a reminder about the renewed Emergency Decree. One wonders what the dictatorship will do now that their own neigbours have made their stand, and what excuse they'll come up with this time for their retaliation to such actions or what they like to call "preventative measures".

I would like to wish these civil servants my very best in their actions and hope that their leaders do not receive the "re-patriotism" that the military have become notorious for.

The right for these hard working people to stand up for their money should not be denied them, nor should they be ignored. After all the 5% pay cut only applies to the civil servants - but not the interim MINISTERS!!! Aren't they also the servants of the people!! Should not they be receiving the same treatment ?

What does this imply about the quality of leadership - military or otherwise - that this country is under right now? When the going gets tough, everyone else takes the pay cut except them?

How does this reflect on this dictator's leadership under fire? (and i'm not referring to the tavioka-patch dash).

The cry for return to democracy has been heard by our neigbours, now lets hear it from our own nation!!

Military Cover Up?

You know you're hitting the right nerves when the Military shuts down one of the talk servers that have been quite "popular" recently by advising the hosts that it's for the "best interest of the people of Fiji".

I had the spare time to visit that site a bit the last couple of weeks and it was a hive of discussions with varying topics, from those interested in providing constructive solutions to getting Fiji out of this rut, to those who simply want to vent both for and against the coup. Understandably, there was slurring and some vulgarity in it, but there were more well presented points and arguments - both for and against - then slurring. Of course, the support for the coup was always coming up short as there was no logical humane defense for the violation of human rights in this country since the illegal military take over.

The bottom line is : The military have shut down an avenue for free speech both for those who support this coup and those who don't. This avenue was no threat whatsoever to the people, and allowed for anonymous free speech - something that has become a precious commodity in these troubled times.
The military no longer allow people to freedom to speak out against the atrocities that they've committed, the violation of people's freedom, twisting the law with their jargon to suit their purposes.

I've made this point before, and will continue to reiterate it until something is done about it that meets the standards if not exceeds those adhered to by our previous governments !!

Their actions raise a lot of questions as to why they're so interested in shutting down free speech for the public? Is it the topic of discussion?
What are they really scared of? - that people will eventually start putting two and two together and raise their voices as one ? How dare they assume that we the people of this county are as gullible as they are ??? How dare they assume that you and I would fall for such blatant arrogance and mistake it for quality leadership!

Well that's not really why i'm writing this article. Lets get back on track here.

In light of the two recent killings at the hands of the military - Nimilote Verebasaga and Sakiusa Rabaka - the investigations have taken a NEW turn in Fiji's crime investigatin history. Well not so new as this article will explain.

To my limited knowledge in all Police investigations into murders the Police force take the lead in the investigations and question everyone involved to set up their case file. When they have completed this, the file is then passed onto the Judiciary or AG's office for the legal process to continue in court.
In these two particular murder cases however - the military have told the police that they will do their 'own internal investigations into the matter and they will give the names of any soldier they identify to be investigated by the police'. Lets stop and catch our breath for a while.

It appears that the RFMF will carry out their own internal investigations into the alleged murders, and then allow the Police to question only those they identify ?!

Is this whole intervention legal?!

How credible are these military investigations?

Aren't the military personnel also subjected to the SAME laws and regulations as normal citizens of Fiji? Even under an Emergency Decree?

Where does it say in the constitution that the military has the legal mandate to inject itself

into a murder investigation in such a manner?

[here's an update of the investigation status]

And the questions continue, but sadly the fact is THE ARMY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT AND GET AWAY WITH IT!
They are after all supported by their commander who just so happens to be the Interim Prime Minister. The continued silence of the Interim Government has given the army free reign in dealing with civilians because even the "politicians" in the Interim Government (junta) know they themselves risk their positions if they were to be so bold as to speak out against the military. Why do you think no one has brought up the issue of deaths at military hands - instead they try to divert our attention with their propaganda machinery to other matters that pale in comparison to deaths at military hands!

Your silence does the same!

So the Military have bent the rules to suit themselves, and as this article will show, it's NOT THE FIRST TIME!!

The same situation occured when the Police were investigating the deaths of the CRW soldiers that died in 2000. The RFMF forced themselves into the investigations and placed themselves as the liason between the Police and those involved in the deaths of the 4 CRW soldiers. To this day NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED for those crimes!!! [read this TIME article for details]

What justice do you see happening for the families of the two civilians murdered at the hands of the military soldiers in early 2007?!

March 15th TV 1 news showed army spokesperson Leweni stating that the military will not rush into investigating the death of Sakiusa Rabaka.
Leweni was shown on Fiji's National TV stating: "Just because someone says that an investigation has to be taken, (doesn't mean) we have to jump".

WHAT!!!

The arrogance of the man is typical of the RFMF attitude now that they can get away with anything! They've gotten away with murder since 2000 and have removed the people who were going to charge them. Who's going to stop them now?

They hide behind their version of "law and order" and use their "Emergency Decree" as an excuse for intimidating the public into silence, singing the same propaganda tune of "taking into consideration as to what is in the best interest and good for the people of Fiji."
(fiji live article)

Are we going to continue our daily lives pretending this is not happening around us? I've taken the liberty of including this article for your perusal.

This will give you an insight into the character of the self proclaimed anit-corruption advocate.

_______________________________________________

For months before he appointed himself President and put Fiji's elected leaders under house arrest, military commander Frank Bainimarama had been threatening to stage a coup unless Laisenia Qarase's government abandoned plans to pardon those behind the abortive coup and mutiny of 2000. But some in Fiji say Bainimarama, who during the mutiny narrowly escaped assassination by rebel troops, has another motive: ending a police probe into the killings of four soldiers from the mutinous special-forces unit.

"It's cold-blooded murder," says Ana Kalounivale, "and that's what Bainimarama is running away from." The 37-year-old widow says Bainimarama must bear some responsibility for the bashing deaths of her husband and three other special-forces soldiers. If he did not order or know about the killings at the time, she believes, then he failed to properly investigate them afterward. "Now we don't know if we will ever have justice," says the mother of four.

The commander has repeatedly denied any responsibility for the deaths of Selesitano Kalounivale, Jone Davui, Epineri Bainimoli and Lagani Rokowaqa. "I never gave any orders to kill," he said in 2003. However, in the weeks before the coup Bainimarama was under increasing pressure over the murders. Police probes and court actions by victims' families and surviving soldiers could have seen him suspended, forced to give evidence about the killings, and potentially facing charges and a six-figure compensation claim against the Fiji Military Force.

During the mutiny by members of the elite Counter-Revolutionary Warfare unit, three loyalist soldiers were shot and—in an experience which some officers say has haunted him ever since—Bainimarama was hunted by armed rebels through a jungle-choked valley behind Suva's Queen Elizabeth Barracks. After the barracks were retaken, loyalists rounded up CRW soldiers regardless of whether they had taken part in the mutiny. Selesitino and the other soldiers allegedly fell victim to a violent paroxysm of revenge.

Among Bainimarama's increasingly peremptory demands to the Qarase government were the shutting down of the police investigation into the murders and the removal of Fiji's Police Commissioner, Andrew Hughes. The day after the coup, Dec. 7, Bainimarama sacked Hughes, who had already left the country after death threats to his family, and appointed Army intelligence chief Jim Koroi as acting Police Commissioner. Next day his soldiers took in for questioning six former CRW soldiers, alleging that they could foment civil unrest.

In the past year, Bainimarama and the military had been fighting four separate legal actions. Three were lodged by former CRW soldiers who survived beatings in 2000. The fourth was a compensation claim by Ana Kalounivale, who successfully sued the Commander and the government for worker's compensation over her husband's death but has yet to receive any money.

In a hearing last April, the court was told that after he was first picked up, Selesitino had a 30-minute meeting with Bainimarama and was then taken to the local police station on the Commander's orders. He was later taken from the station by four or five soldiers. Acquaintances of his told the court they were working in a building next door to the police station when soldiers arrived with Selesitino. They said they heard him crying out for help as he was driven away in a military vehicle. According to the judgment of Magistrate Ajmal Gulab Khan, "He was on the floor of the van and bystanders could hear swearing, hitting with rifle butts and kicking at the back of the tray." Around midnight, his hideously injured body was delivered to the morgue.

Magistrate Khan found that "the assaulting soldiers may have exceeded in the scope of their duty by assaulting the deceased, but they acted as soldiers of FMF and were responsible for their actions in the general scope of their duties." He awarded Ana Kalounivale $24,000, but she says the military is appealing the judgment.

The FMF has never explained where the soldiers took Selesitino or why he was singled out. But documents lodged in support of civil lawsuits by the three CRW soldiers who survived beatings give a chilling insight into what might have happened. The soldiers "seized me at gunpoint and handcuffed my hands behind my back," said Sergeant Viliame Lotawa of the night he was taken from the police station. "I was punched, kicked and beaten with blunt objects such as rifle butts and iron rods. I was beaten all the way to [Queen Elizabeth Barracks]." Lotawa says his attackers included a former Fijian rugby international, Sergeant Jack Komaitai. Komaitai told Time last week there was no truth to the allegation. Another survivor, Metuisela Railumu, told the court he was taken by soldiers to a shooting range and "beaten with wood and iron rods all over my body." The case of the third survivor, Barbados Mills, is due to go to trial early in 2007.

All three suits include Bainimarama as a defendant, charging that as military commander he was responsible for the actions of his troops. Police have interviewed 12 soldiers about the bashings, but the military has reportedly insisted that a senior officer attend all interviews; in at least one case, the officer prematurely terminated the interview. When Time put Lotawa's allegations to Bainimarama's spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, he said, "Who told you that?" He has since refused to speak to the magazine.

Police have told Time the military conducted its own investigation, under the supervision of then officer Jack Koroi, Bainimarama's hand-picked new acting Police Commissioner. None of the alleged perpetrators named by Lotawa and his fellow survivors has faced any military trial or disciplinary hearing. Police are unhappy about Koroi's appointment. Says one officer, who asked to remain anonymous: "Koroi knows what to look for in the files. He's a former Criminal Investigations Department officer and he was the point of contact up at the barracks for people wanting to interview soldiers in the past." Contacted by Time last week, Koroi said of the police investigation, "[The suspects in the bashings] have all been questioned but they have decided to stay mute. There is a lot of difficulties with this. I have to see the file before I comment." Since leaving Fiji, sacked Police Commissioner Hughes, an Australian, has said one reason for the coup was self-preservation on Bainimarama's part. "He's been resistant to the investigation into the murder of the Counter-Revolutionary Warfare soldiers in 2000," Hughes told ABC News. "We believe he has some questions to answer in that regard himself." Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer shares Hughes' view. "I think, in particular, Commodore Bainimarama is deeply concerned about investigations by the police into the Fiji military itself," he told ABC Radio.
A senior Fiji police officer tells Time he and his colleagues have new evidence suggesting some of the "top [military] brass ordered the actions." Now, he says, they are bracing for the day when soldiers march in and remove their files. But "We've got copies," he says. "We won't give up." Ana Kalounivale may get justice yet.

The Lesser of Two Evils

When the military took over the elected government in December, their interim Prime Minister Dr Senilagakali was quoted as saying that their takeover was illegal but they were the "lesser of two evils".

In the last three months, the people of Fiji have seen for themselves the tactics used by this military led regime to enforce their will upon the people of Fiji.

Not only did they take over Government, but injected themselves into the Police, Prisons, Judiciary and various financial bodies - all under the guise of fighting corruption.

The military commander was so keen on making us see things his way that he's right hand man Driti was put in charge of "re-patriotising" any citizen that spoke out against what was happening around them; any citizen that spoke out for the truth and sought to bring back democracy as we know it.

What started as pre-christmas exercise for a former politician who was forced to run around the ground at gunpoint, continued to public humiliation of certain loyal citizens - citizens who stood up for democracy and were beaten and humiliated in the army camp during christmas.
With no one in power speaking out to stop these early acts of terrorism the terrorists took to the streets with a vengance, letting their adrenaline get the better of them... until sadly it cost a family their father. Still nothing was done to stop this mindless violence, this "lesser of two evils". Even when a mother had to bury her 19 year old son who died as a direct result of beatings received from the military - the interim military led administration were silent and remain so to this day!

The standard military training that formed the base of what was once Fiji's national pride and the UN's greatest asset was turned on it's own people resulting so far in the deaths of at least two civilians who to all our knowledge were never given a right to legal counsel or even charged with anything that warranted their captivity.
This is of course not including the still open case of the deaths of the following soldiers at the hands of the military: Selesitano Kalounivale, Jone Davui, Epineri Bainimoli and Lagani Rokowaqa.

The people of Fiji have been told repeatedly to go with the flow, move forward etc etc etc; yet we have people being taken away to military camp for beatings for things as small as swearing at the military. As part of the expected propaganda machinery the military were quick to point out that crime and lawlessness has dropped since they enforced military rule - but sadly no one pointed out publicly the glaring obvious - they were the biggest law breakers in town with their illegal take over, detaining and beating civilians for something as small as what they said, sometimes even beating them to their deaths.

Where was/were/is the police in all this one might politely ask?
I'm asking politely in case the lewenis take offence and question my right to ask this question.

Sadly since the December take over, law and order has taken on a new meaning for the peaceful citizens of this beloved country. We can no longer voice our opinions in public for fear of being reported as inciting people against this regime.

The bottom line is that everyone in Fiji is aware that what they say about the military led regime can cost them their lives - and that's a fact!.

Is this the Fiji you want your children to grow up in? Is this the Fiji you're proud of?
